Flow Wuppertal - Student Living

Flow AG in Wuppertal offers young people from all over the world a shared flat concept that offers a lot of individuality and community. All in the spirit of sustainability, youthful design and digitalisation. To help students find their way around, a guidance system was created for the entire building complex in 2022. It was comprehensively planned and designed by Jungmann Design from Cologne and realised by meng.

The complex consists of three buildings, which are differentiated by colour coding that corresponds to the thematic worlds of the living concept. The colour coding of the building parts is very well received by the residents. The theme in House 1 is "Industrial", which is visualised with a rusty brown colour. The theme in House 2 is "Urban". The chosen blue is reminiscent of the reflections of the sky in the glass facades of big cities. House 3 has the theme "Nature" and thus the shade green.

In addition to the result, this project also provides insights into the production of the information elements and their installation on site.

Production

The letters, numbers and floor plans were first milled from 3 mm thick acrylic sheets. Afterwards, all parts were painted in the specified concept colours. After drying, the elements were numbered and placed in precisely fitting cardboard cut-outs for transport. Precise templates were made and enclosed to ensure that the letters were spaced correctly on site to the nearest millimetre.

Assembly

The meng team's fitters were able to assign the exact positions of the signposts and information elements on the basis of the numbering and location plans in Jungmann Design's design manual. The surfaces were first cleaned. Then the templates were mounted to size and aligned. After fixing the stencils, the letters and numbers were prepared for mounting with a special adhesive and placed precisely on the wall with the help of the stencils. In the outdoor area, letters are additionally fixed on their central axis with pins. These provide more stability. In this way, the movement of the material can be compensated for in heat and cold.
