Cloth factory Kusel

History of the cloth factory

In 1760 Jean Christoph Zöllner settled in Kusel as a stocking maker. In 1856, his grandson Daniel founded the woollen goods factory of Daniel Zöllner, Kusel. Not only the farmers of the area were supplied, but the finished goods were also brought to the wool markets in other towns. The company expanded, burned down and was rebuilt. The number of workers increased until it reached 315 workers in 1913. After that a difficult time began for the factory. Although it flourished again before and after the Second World War, it did not experience the boom of the sixties. In 1959, the premises were leased to the Bundeswehr. Due to their location on the edge of the city center and their architectural historical value, the buildings represented a valuable potential for urban development. The city of Kusel therefore decided in 1990 to purchase the factory and to convert it for commercial and service companies. With the support of the EU, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the district of Kusel, the set goal was achieved. At present, more than 200 people work in the cloth factories again.
